Size of gif and jpg images

I have a website and often use gif. and jpg. images, but I'm puzzled by the different sizes (expressed as KBs) shown for the same icon image. For example a gif image may be shown as "Size 4.37KB and Size on disk 8KB", similarly a jpg may be shown as "Size 11.7 and Size on disk 12.00KB". Can someone explain these differences please and which disk is being referred to?

The disk being referred to is whichever hard drive the images are stored on. This could be your own PC or the hard drive a web server.

Information on any hard drive is stored in 'blocks' of a fixed size. If a 'block' can contain 4kB, then a 4.37kB file would require two blocks and take up 8kB of space. Similarly, an 11.7kB file would require 3 blocks and take up 12kB on the disk.
