Limewire - some questions

Yes, I know they have a website, but I'd rather get answers from "independent" users, i.e. my fellow ABers!

a) where exactly is the music downloaded from?

b) is it safe/secure?

c) is it REALLY free?

d) can I put the tracks on my iPod?

It is downloaded from a strangers hard drive, just as they can download from yours if you have any folders set to 'share'.

If you are not careful, they could be downloading more than music.

You must be on top of firewalls and virus protection - who knows what nasties are lurking? An ideal way of spreading virus.

It is free.

If the music is in the right format, you can put it on your ipod.

I don't use itunes, but most files are in the mp3 format, so should be fine.

its a pain in the backside transfering them, it took me ages to work out how to do it and i dont think i could describe how mto either, but thankfully they come from limewire in the righr format.

So does the transfer/download take long?

If I'm sharing stuff from someone else's PC, if they turn their machine off, that'll surely mess up the download?

It can take forever - especially if the other person's computer is turned off half way through.

It can slow your pc down too - especially if lots of other people and downloading from your pc at the same time.

It's best to choose a download that more people have. The more sources the faster the download.
Im quite sure you can limit the upload speed to save on your bandwidth, I cant really remember as I prefer torrent files.

Downloading files, with Limewire, is free as long as you don't get caught!

Simply downloading copyright files, from peer-to-peer networks (such as Gnutella, which is the one Limewire connects into), is usually only a civil offence, for which you can be sued but not fined or imprisoned.

However, peer-to-peer networks work on the basis that, while you're downloading files from one person's PC, files on your own PC are made available for uploading to other people's PCs. The law regards this as distribution, which is a criminal offence, punishable by fines or imprisonment. (Downloading can also be a criminal offence if it's down in the course of a business or to the serious detriment of the copyright holders).

only allow limewire to share 1 specific folder so you can choose exactly what you want other people to download from you.

never download wma format files.in my experience these are the dodgy ones.

Some people seem to think there breaking the law if they download music for free, there not ! ,they only break the law if they go on and sell that music (Because its not theres to sell)
Why anybody would pay Apple for music is beyond me, when there are many sites around where they can do it for free !
