will a microwave oven interver with a computer
if so how far away must the computer be so that it is ok
as i an thinking about setting one up in my kitchen

Well, they can interfere with a wireless signal, one that you may typically use with a wireless router for example. So can wireless doorbells, DECT phones and dodgy Christmas tree lights!

Personally, the only such problem I have ever had, was a DECT phone just occasionally interfering with a wireless mouse.

My PC at work didn't like the PC near the microwave i hid one in a cabinet near the PC.
I wasn't on the net but i did have problems with things until i moved the microwave

if you leave it in too long the keys will get too hot to touch

Best thing is to try .... (unless you do actually put it inside) you won't physically damage anything
because cases tend to be screened

start with a 4 foot no go zone (a leaky microwave can damage you ... and under extreme condition has melted contact lenses on to the surface of the eye (ouch)).

speaking of leaks .... the sink should be avoided as well
as should the fridge and the cooker rings ......oh and the kettle

thinking about it why do you want to set it up in the kitchen?,,,,, with the exception of the bathroom I doubt you'll find a more hostile environment for a pc.

We have a computer immediatley next to a microwave at work, literally inches apart, and we have had no problems at all.

We also operate wifi laptops quite close to it without problems.

It may depend on the screening in both, older machines may suffer more problems.

We have, however, had viewing problems with CRT monitors near radio security gates (like the ones in department stores) so it may be more to do with the frequency range of the emmissions. TFT screens seem okay though.
