When I try to insert a letter into a word I have typed, instead of making the word longer, it deletes a letter in the word instead, hard to describe! I think I must have touched a button, but can't work it out! can you help ?

You must have hit the "Ins" or "Insert" key on your keyboard by mistake. It's a toggle on / off. Just press it again and you will be back to normal.

Thanks Scotman, I have found the insert key, top right also has PrtScn and Sysrq on same key -- and pressed it, also pressed it with Shift key, but doesn't make any difference !!
Try shift and figure 0. (Just a chance). The keyboard you're using and the one Windows thinks you're using may be different.
...or at the bottom of the window, under your document but above the taskbar, you should see OVR in bold. Double click this and it will un-bold and you'll be back to normal.
