It's a nice idea; a good attempt at getting people chatting on a wide range of subject. But I do agree with the previous comments made by robber1 and woofgang... can it be brightened up a bit? Even just brightening a page up can make it look more accessible and easier to navigate (just look at the design of this very answerbank site!
If the technology isn't too far above you (as it is me), then I think a nice addition would be a chatroom or two to make the social chatting interactive and rapid.
