pop-up ads with almost every webpage I open? Even sites such as BBC that didn't used to have third-party ads. Could I have downloaded something by mistake?

Get a pop-up blocker. There is one included in the Google toolbar which I have found to be good
It is true that more and more ads are appearing these days, but I don't think you should be getting them with BBC etc. You are probably correct that you've managed to get some sort of adscript into your browser. Get Lavasoft Ad-aware, it will scan your system for spyware and adware etc and remove it for you. This may be the solution to your problem if you don't want to get an annoying pop-up blocker.
