my crappy generic mp3 player off ebay plays some mp3s but when i try to put most on to it it just comes back with 'format error'. Same with most videos. Any way round this?

I would check that they are actually MP3s!! I have fallen into that trap myself!!
try resampling the files ... I've found that not all mp3s are equal!

switch is free http://nch.com.au/switch/index.html - you might as well give it a go

It's possible that it doesn't support Variable Bit Rate (VBR) mp3s. Some MP3s are VBR, some Constant Bit Rate (CBR). You can convert VBR to CBR with most audio tools.
It may just play constant bitrate files, and not variable bitrate files?

Or, it may only play files up to a certain bitrate, such as 128kbps?
