Connecting laptop to LCD television

Further to my earlier post I have purchased an S-S video cable which I am using to connect my HP notebook to my Philips LCD TV.

When switching to AV mode on the TV the picture is displayed only in black & white and is very blurry and out of focus.

Does anyone know how to resolve this ?
