I'm not sure if this is exactly what you're looking for, but I'm assuming you are referring to the marks that publishers/printers put into the text of a book to indicate that there is a footnote about the word preceding the mark. The reader must then look at the bottom of the page to discover what they are trying to draw his/her attention to...eg a word's obsoleteness.

Different publishers and different organisations use different sequences for footnote-symbols. Here is one such sequence: asterisk *, dagger ', double dagger ', section mark �, paragraph mark �, double vertical lines II, double asterisks **, double double daggers ''. If those are not what you wanted, I apologise for wasting your time.
