I've got exactly the same problem! My best guess is that one of the automatic Windows updates has screwed up the files. On my laptop (an Acer), the program affected is the Realtek audio that came already installed. I've had no joy at the Acer or Realtek websites so am going to call the Acer helpline when I get time.

I'll let you know how I get on, and check back here to see if anyone has a solution!
