You guys have been my saviours. I have one last question (i hope). You said that turning off my router every night when I turn the pc off, makles no difference and causes no probs.

will turning it off stop it from settliing in and determining its maximum speed?

BT told me that it takes a few days for the new broadband line to settle and find its maximum - will turning the router off stop this from happening?

I wish I could give you a proper answer, because I have never heard of this. I assume your router is part of your modem, and not separate.

I DO know, though, that if you are having any problems with your broadband - dropped connection, too slow and so on - the first thing to try is to switch the modem off at the plug and wait a minute or so. This resets it and resolves many problems.

So I honestly do not think you will be slowing it down by switching off.

the router is a router and modem in one (BT Voyager 210 i think)

If you turn it off it MAY take a little longer to find its optimum speed, but the speed you achieve is governed more by local internet traffic than your router. Also when BT say to leave it on, it is the entire connection including the computer that is needed, otherwise there is no throughput from the router to the computer to allow proper assessment.

I honestly do not believe it makes a difference. But to settle it in your own mind - run an experiment.

Keep everything on for a week, and monitor the speeds.

Then turn it off overnight - and monitor the speed when you switch it back on.

Once the BT system has determined the optimum speed, turning it off overnight, or for a few days will not slow it down. The optimum configuration will have been set by then. Personally, I wouldn't bother leaving it on. I leave mine on all the time, my daughter turns hers off except for evening time and we both get the same speed. We live close to each other as well so there is no difference because of distance from the exchange.
