Should I update on Windows XP?

The last time I updated from the pop up box reminder, I got a bug in my AOL couldn't open Broadband, and they had to talk me thru mending it. They said the cause was the Windows updating. Is this true, and what will happen if I just don't update any more ?? I have Windows Defender by the way, if that helps. Sorry I am not technical !

You should always update Windows mainly because they are security updates and patches. Ive heard plenty bad things about AOL but this is a new one.
It may be easier to do it my way.I set updates to notification only then get them myself mainly because auto update never worked. Just click on start , Windows/Microsoft update.
