I think it would be a good idea if people were able to keep the points they receive when their answers are ranked. Their total points could be linked to their username and maybe include a symbol beside their username similar to eBay to indicate how many points they have.

There would be a few good reasons to include this. Users would be more inclined to answer difficult questions and give longer and more detailed answers in order to receive 3 points. The more competitive members would be interested in seeing how they're doing in some form of league table.

What does everyone else think of this?

nice idea Travelcard. Negative points would be good too to help cut down on stupid false and ill informed responses.
But keep it filed under 'daydream', Tc, 'cos nothing ever gets done here, [except we got a New category called Adverts)
I always give 3 stars if the answerer backs up the answer with a good web link. - and not just 'go here for answer either, cos everyone can't always spare the time..
Also, what a previous user said about no to spy and popup but banners are ok. have more of those instead.. but nothing will be done.. :-)
It might be quite hard to implement: members who were there "at the start" would have an unfair advantage over newer members, for instance - though I guess an "average" scoreboard in addition to a "total" one might even this out. However, I have been on sites where this happens and seen major flame wars when Mr X thought his answer was better than Miss Y's, or that he deserved a better rank than he was awarded.
