If you are downloading from more than one source - more often than not you cannot preview :o(
I think what happens is that Kazza downloads the file in small chunks, this has the benefit that if there is more than one user with that file it can get parts from different places at the same time. I think it tries to download in order but at times downloads from different part of the file, this means that sometime you can see it before its finished and sometimes you cant. So in answer there is no sure way of being able to do this. Also I think it also depends on the file type.
If you use KazaaLite (recommended, and free from Spyware), click on Tools>Dat View. A window should come up showing your downloads. Set the source (1st icon) to your dl folder if nothing is coming up. Set the output file (3rd icon) if necessary. I find the copy mode "only first good data block" works best. Click the file you want to view, and then the second icon (copy). If the file is large enough (usually 5000k+), you will end up with a viewable file in the selected folder.
Yes. As you say with some downloads hitting play is the best way to preview what you have, but it will not show you all you have downloaded, to get this, go into your shared folder, and open the .dat file with windows media player (if you leave only the one download un-paused then arrange your shared folder by date it should be the first file). Like others have said kazaa downloads later-on parts of the file before all of the earlier ones are finished to improve time slightly, but you will still have more than pressing play. (if you get any errors opening then copy the dat file to another directory and try again). However this will only work on (most) .mpg-type files, and not (most) .avi ones. This is becuase avi is compressed more. (This is why you cannot preview your 'big' files, if they were mpg then they would be 'huge' ones!!). To preview these you can use avi-preview. I think you can get this off kazaa itself, but i recomend you get the latest 'Kazaa Lite K++' as this has no adware (ever noticed annoying pop-ups when your browser isn't even open? use an ad-aware type program to get rid of those) and also comes with handy add-ons like an automatic 'search more' and a download accelerator, and guess what? Avi-preview!! To get the latest kazaa lite just search for "Kazaa lite" (with the "s) on google and it will be the top option, or you could just press i'm feeling lucky... i guess it depends how lucky you're feeling eh? :P well that killed some time, lets see if my download's finished!! :P
I can't speak for Kazaa, but I find WinMX (www.winmx.com) much better for finding films, and in that you can watch partial MPGs using Media Player, as long as they are not currently downloading (WinMX supports resuming though), and partial AVIs using DivX (www.divx.com). Oh, just thought, if you're a Mac user (Boo, Hiss! Hehe), you can't use WinMX anyway, but hope this helps
I have been using MyKazaaGold for years and have never had a problem. You get to download unlimited music from just about any artist under the sun and you never have to pay any fee's per song. It's basically free, which is good enough for me! Check it out: http://www.MyKazaaGold.com

Kazaa Platinum http://www.kazaa-platinum.com recently came into market. I bought it & I think this was the best choice I ever made.

It gives me specific results for my music & movie downloads, unlike Limewire or any other Kazaa.
It also gives a free anti virus programme , free Ipods/ Mp3 transfer software, free CD burning software free, all in just 29.50 $ one time lifetime fee.

I must say it is a revoultion in music / movies downloads.

I would like to say, Flickr music is the best free music/movies download library that exist today. Membership is very reasonable, they provide fresh tracks each month and they're more than happy to work with you and help you Set it up on your PC. Unlike other free Music download companies, Flickr music gives you the freedom to re-arrange the music tracks and use them in any way you want. What more could you ask for? http://www.flickrmusic.com is the way to go .
