unlocking the simlock on a samsung E350

ive have been given a samsung E350 mobile phone, at the moment it is on T Mobile network, when i put my orange simcard in it tells me to put the simlock password in, i have looked on the internet for this code, i have found numerous codes but they have * and # in them when i go to put these in the star does not go in and when i press the # key it tells me the password is too short, does anybody know how to do put these symbols in or does anybody know the right code to unblock the phone, please please help, its a christmas present for my daughter

Using unlock code specified in it , You can proceed unlocking your mobile under Orange Network ..
