How many people do you reach if you pass an email along?

In the same way that a newspaper is bought by one person but often read by 2 others - does anyone know if there is a stat that says for example "If you send an funny/viral email to 6 people in your address book, they will each send it on to 6 people and so on. Therefore the email that you send is actually delivered to 1000 (!) people on average".
