.avi codec identity utility.

Is there a utility that will detect the codec used on an .avi file? I read you can open the file using WordPad and it tells you the second or third line down but opening a 700 MB file this way upsets my machine. I recall someone posting about such a utility before but I didn't have the wherewithal to write it down. Thanks.
