Is is possible to insert 'word count' into a Word document (for example an essay), so that the Word count automatically updates itself?

I have Word 2003, went into help and searched for Word Count.

It told me to select Tools then Word Count.

Not sure if that is in all versions of Word.
On the tool bar select INSERT then FIELD
On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the Print tab. In the left hand box select DOCUMENT INFORMATION in the right hand box select NumWords this will insert the field on your page

On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the Print tab.

Under Printing options, select the Update links check box.
Word updates any linked information before printing the document.
Let me know if this works OK for you
If you want to update before printing just highlight the field right click and select from the menu Update field

Thanks a lot Yvonne!

Here are the instructions for Word 2007, for anyone who needs them:

On the Insert tab, in the Text group, click Quick Parts, and then click Field.

In the Field names list, select Info, then in the Info categories list, select NumWords. Click OK
