When a MP3 file is converted to WAV, where does the extra info come from?
Is the resulting WAV file the same quality as a WAV file that was converted to MP3 then back to WAV?

It comes from the algorithm being used, i.e., the computer guesses the extra stuff (perhaps educated guessing).

Converting from CD straight to wav will be better than to mp3 then to wav: mp3 is lossy, so you'll lose data whatever you do.
