Broadband connection problem

When I switch on the computer from cold I have trouble connecting to my server. I switch off the computer and my set top box as the manual recommends but it can take the best part of an hour to connect. The first connection usually fails after about a minute. I then switch off and restart again after which everything is fine and I can surf for as long as I wish.
Could someone please tell me whether the problem is my computer or the set top box. Also, how do I sort it out.

I had this problem using wireless. Once I switched to Ethernet the problem disappeared. I believe my problem was that the Router settings were being corrupted by other signals but I cannot be sure.
