A chap once told me that the secret to a good listing on Google is having "links" to other listed sites on your site. I tried this and within about 3-4 weeks of creating a new site it now appears on the first page of a Google search on my company name. So it worked for me but whether that was the reason for it doing so I couldn't say for sure..

Hopalong, are you trying to sell something online, are you into crafts for instance? if so I may be able to help you get a very good and free placing on google.

There are submission websites that submit your URL to many search engines for free without you having to do much yourself.

Try: submitexpress or dreamsubmit

What was said about links in a previous answer is very true.Try and get as many links to your site as possible,this can be done by signing guestbooks or putting your site details on business directory websites,for example.

But if you can get a few links on sites that already have a good Google ranking then that is better than having lots on sites that nobody looks at.
