I am going on a gap year project for 2 months in mongolia living in the gobi desert with a nomadic tribe. I went trekking last year with a big organisation with my school for month and we had this phone type thing which could give out a signal so we could be found in danger and we could ring and text from places with little signal, i think it was also a sort of gps aswell. I was wondering if there is anything available on the market which would help in mongolia so i could contact england in an emergency?
Any help would be great thanks.

Sounds like you want a device capable of Global Mobile Personal Communications by Satellite (GMPCS).

There are a number of different manufacturers of these (even Motorola do one) but would not be readily availabe down your local 'Phones 4U'..

Buying one may prove to be a little expensive, a quick Google will reveal some places willing to Hire, however I'm not sure what thier policy would be on a two year lease with travel to Mongolia!

Mongolia is covered by two of the major operators, Iridium and Thuraya so ensuring you have a compatible peice of equipment will be essential. Again a quick Google should provide you with the information you need.
