With any dial-up internet account you need to know three things: 1) Your username 2) Your password 3) The telephone number you dial to. Find out these three things and make a note of them. Remove all traces of AOL from your computer (start-settings-control panel-add/remove programs) plus remove the dial-up account (it should have been removed but to check double click My Computer and click dial-up networking, then remove the AOL account -in fact remove all of them. Once this is done, recreate your dial-up: Find dial-up networking (see above) then create a new connection, select dial to a network, put the phone number in, call it AOL and on the connect screen add your username and password. You can also put a shortcut to the desktop. Make sure the connection connects and that your computer registers on the remote network then make this the default dial-up and that Internet Explorer uses this to connect to the internet (right-click Internet Explorer, properties, on the connections tab highlight AOL then set default and ensure the always dial my default connection is ticked.
