This is the only way I can think of describing the problem - by the procedure. Start - Programs - System Tools - ScanDisk - select Start. The Scandisk window with the revolving disk doesn't revolve, the whole thing freezes. I have to press ctrl, alt + del, which brings up the message (Scandisk C [not respondind]. End Task is no help, so then I have to press the reset button on the tower, which always in the past has brought up the blue ScanDisk screen, but now it goes straight to the desktop. I do hope this makes more sense now - I have tried!!

OS version?

98 SE.
What happens if you boot up into DOS mode, type "lock c:" to remove the OS's filesystem locks and then run scandisk? Does it run then?

I'm sorry lisaj, you've totally lost me - I really don't know anything about DOS mode. All I can tell you is that it's ok in Safe mode, and it's been like this only a very short time.

I do have Reg Cleaner - would a file be lost through this being over-zealous?

Can you reinstall it through Conhtrol Panel 'Add/Remove programs, setup tab accessories/System Tools? Or maybe find the exact name of the scandisk.exe file and reinstall it from your 98se disk; maybe on there in a cabfile you may have to manually search each cab as they're like a zip [you'd have to extract it with a right click i think] Anyway, just a suggestion; don't know exactly how you do it maybe someone else can add to this idea..
