Does anyone know if there is any sites out there with a shareware programs that I can download that will allow me to convert Bitmap files to Jpgs? Also does anyone know why whenever I try to download a jpg from any source on the net my computer is only allowing me to save it as a bitmap file? this is annoying as bitmaps take a lot more memory to store...as penelope pitstop says 'haylp haylp!!'.

I don't know the answer to the first question, I would use photoshop but that is not free/shareware (there is always kazaa). I have had the second problem and the only way I fixed it was to delete then receate my profile on the computer I was using (Windows 2000). Not the best of fixes I grant you, but it did work.
Just had a quick search on ZDnet.com. Found a small image editor that should do the trick. It can be downloaded from http://www.xnview.com/ and it's free. I just downloaded the standard version and you can convert a number of different image file types.
MS Paint will allow you to "Save As" in jpg format (only in newer versions as supplied with Win 2000 and XP). It's free and you probably already have it. Look in your start menu under Programs - Accessories
JPG? MS Paint saves as GIF not JPG
ps. that's on Win2k - you're gonna respond by saying XP handles JPG also, i'm guessing?
Ms Paint on W2K permts saves as bmp, jpg and gif
Internet Explorer 6 lets you save as bmp or jpg
Darth - Paint on XP and 2K handles BMP, GIF and JPG formats both to open and to save as - I have both OS's running at home and at work and use it as an image format converter all the time. I checked that this was the case before posting my reply.
Having just opened MS Paint once more to double check i can definitely confirm my MS Paint running on Windows 2000 Professional, will only save (when selecting "save as") to:
Monochrome bmp
16 colour bmp
256 colour bmp
24 bit bmp
and graphics Interdoodah gif

why do we differ?
Get 'Irfanview' freeware; it's the dog's bollox. :-)

Thanks everyone....I should ahve said at the start that I was aware that paint did convert but i had collected so many images before i thought of doing this that i wanted a utility that would do a batch convert to save me doing it one at a time....thanks all for the replies!
Irfanview does batch convert..
Darth - checked again - I can definitely save as jpg - MS Paint V5 Service Pack 2 (Win2K SP2). Maybe its the service pack that makes the difference?
