how come when watching the football on itv through sky i get a black strip on each side of the screen

i think its because some countries / stadiums still record the matches for the 4:3 ratio and so when they get transmitted to the uk, not sure if this is just widescreen tvs, the lines are added, someone can clarify that im sure
