Yep.Much better!
Why buy a new one when you can clean the original, turn the mouse over under the silver label or whatever you can push in a small cross-headed screwdriver, undo the screw or screws take the top of and really clean out the fluff.
Why bother to clean the fluff off a mouse with moving parts when you can buy an optical one for a few pounds with NO moving parts which will never need cleaning.

An optical mouse has no ball underneath and no small rollers to get dirty.

Note this is NOT the same thing as a wireless mouse which is one that has no wire connecting it to the PC.
As someone mentioned a wireless mouse, can I suggest, if you are tempted, DO NOT get one of these. Yes, they are tidy, but they eat thru batteries. Also, some come as mouse and keyboard combo's, but without a direct link to the PC, you cannot stop disk checks etc if you are wireless.
Optical definately, but watch it a bit, if you are in the habit of dropping your mouse off the table or whatever - be warned that some optical mice will be damaged (beam misalignment) if given a good hard landing on a tiled floor.
Yes, optical mice are good. I use a laptop and bought a mouse a couple of months ago. Anyhow, whilst browing, I discovered a new type of mouse. Not an optical mouse but a laser mouse.. ooooo!

Don't quite know what the difference is but the obvious difference is the lack of a red beam when you pick the mouse up and look underneath it. Yes, the lens is there, but nothing shines from it! Clever stuff. It's a good mouse and I recommend it highly.

It also has a battery indicator on top of the mouse which only lights up upon movement of the mouse, and goes red when charging is nearing. The buttons are also blended into the mouse. I reckon I charge it once a week on the base.

I don't know how I have managed to describe a computer mouse in so many words but there you go. Oh by the way it's a Logitech MX Laser .
The main advantage of a laser mouse is its ability to register more surface detail than an optical one so is less prone to erratic performance on bland surfaces.

The downside is its cost
Wireless optical - best mouse I've ever used.

PS use rechargeable batteries, though!
Reason your mouse sticks isn't just that the ball is dirty. If you take out the ball and look inside, you'll see two rollers that the ball presses against that control the cursor movement. You'll see the line of dirt stuck to each of them . Clean the gunge off with a Q-tip and isopropyl alcohol, or meths, clean the ball, re-assemble, and it'll be like new.
If you do go for optical, I'm with Postdog - after several wireless ones, I'm back to a wired mouse, no batteries and a lot fewer problems.
