I use hotmail to send all my emails - is there a way of being able to put something on the email or something to know if the email has been opened at the other end? Many Thanks.

If you use a web browser then no but if you use Outlook Express you can use the read request feature (options-receipts-tick the request a read reciept...). OE is easy to setup with Hotmail.
j2: Not entirely true... if the person had access to some webspace with some scripting functionality, say PHP, then they could embed a link back to that script that would be opened when the recipient opened their email. The script would then log that occurrence. Using hotmail by itself however, then you're absolutely right.
