Could someone tell me what file forma It uses, will it take MP3 and if not what programme will convert mp3 to the required format.

It's easiest to use it with iTunes, which can be freely downloaded from apple's website.

It'll play mp3 and aac, as well as several others.

The only one it shouldn't play is WMA, since that's a windows format, but iTunes converts that for you, so as fo3nix said, iTunes is the way to go (plus its beautiful)
