windows wont shut down

can any one please help me i am running windows xp and it wont shut down. My computer starts the shutdown proccess but stays on "windows is shutting down " any one got any answers...

It could be lots of things. The most common is a problem driver. It could be some process that is still running EG anti-virus scan.

Basically, it's very difficult to cure without extensive diagnostics.

Can't you just leave it? How long does it take to turn off?
It could be an old motherboard that requires you to manually turn off the computer.
Possibly, but if so, it usually knows and tells you to turn off the machine yourself.
Google "windows shutdown problem" - lots of advice, can be many things - even a corrupted sound file (for the shutdown sound, I assume - I usually have the Windows sounds switched off anyway).
