when i click in system in performance and maintenance the processor speed changes - why is this

it ranges from 512mhz to 1.67 ghz? is it normal for this to happen on startup?

Possibly because some processors change speed in order to save power? They slow down when they've nothing to do.

This is just guess, though!
I think catso may be right. Also, I think Windows sometimes confuses itself from time to time. My current processors is an AMD64 3000+ that should be running at 2GHz. Usually it says this, but sometimes windoes reports it as 1GHz, as well as 2GHz in a different application.
