Backspacing MS Word

I used to be able to highlight an area of text and then press backspace, but it wont work anymore...i have to press delete all the time, which is only annoying because of habit. Have I clicked something that means it wont use this function anymore? Thanks x

not sure about the last part of your question danimarei, but if you mean to delete using backspace you don't need to highlight the text first you just have to use backspace
Try this:-

Tools
Options
Edit
Typing Replaces Selection (should be ticked)
