can anyone recommended a decent one - am running google and panicware but still having a few geting through

Try downloading firefox, it is a browser like internet explorer but it blocks most pop ups. You can import all favourites from IE so you don't lose anything.

I second firefox. Uninstall all this separate popup blocker rubbish and just use firefox.

Team it with two extensions,
https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/1136/
https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/1865/

and adverts on web pages will be blocked too.
