Can I read an e mail without opening it?

Im not sure about this as it depends on your email provider. I know that with AOL you can open and read an email and then mark it as unread. Thats as much as i know, sorry.
No. "reading" is the same as "opening". Think of it like a regular letter. You can't read it without opening the envelope first.
Yes, if you use outlook express. You need to make sure the settings are correct. For a start, make sure that the "view" includes an option to read a preview - that is, when the mail is highlighted, a section of the page will show (in my case, below the list of mails, but this may depend on how you have it configured). Go into View, and use Layout to configure.

Secondly, in Tools, options, then read, alter the time "highlighting before being marked as read" to a length of time to suit you - this should give you ample time to decide whether to open or delete.
Postdog's answer is incorrect, when the e-mail appears in the preview pane, it is opened - just not in a separate window. As fo3nix says you can't read it without opening it - whether in the preview pane or in a separate window.
