If you have installed the CD that came with the printer it usually installs some tools and utilities.

Your Windows menu will have an option like HP printer or something like that.

If you look in there you will probably find a utility that will tell you your ink levels.

It is not totally accurate so do not rush out and buy new ink just because it looks a bit low.

I don't use XP and I haven't got an HP printer but this usually works with most systems:

Go into the printers folder. (In Windows Me, that's Start > Settings > Printers. It'll be something similar in XP - you might have to go via 'Control Panel').

Right-click on the icon for your printer.

Select 'Properties'

What you see at this stage varies between printers but, typically, there'll be a set of tabs. Click on the most likely looking one, which will probably be something like 'Maintenance'. Hopefully, you'll find something like 'Start Status Monitor' or 'Check Ink Levels'.

I have an hp printer, on your desktop you will find an icon HP Director click on this , then click on "Settings" and go to " Print Settings" move pointer across to "Printer Toolbox". On that screen you will find "Estimated ink Level" click on this. Make sure your printer is switched on.
