how can i ensure that items I delete are actually deleted and unrecoverable by hackers. you have to be so carfull with identity theft etc

use a util such as http://www.heidi.ie/eraser/



Highlight, press SHIFT & DELETE answer YES and they will disappear into the ether. If there are a lot of them - hold down CONTROL and you can highlight as many-or as few as you want, then as above.
The only was to truly make it unrecoverable is to overwrite it with a series of random binary digits. Even after a deep format, data can be recovered.

emandvee: that will just skip the recycle bin, but still won't properly erase the data.

That is a package that includes very, very secure public key encryption software, so that you can send email or anything else without anyone knowing what it is.

Also has a file and free space eraser, that works very securely.
i use evidence eliminator. seems to do the trick.
