I have a samsung D600. how do I.....?

Hi all

I have just a got a Samsung D600 and have intalled the software on to my laptop to download mp3's but t always says phone not connected... what am I doing wrong? also I am right in thinkin i put the usb cable in the same slot as i charge e phone arent i? its just i cant find anywhere else on phone where it fits and the instructions are rubbish.
