Think of a filing cabinet, and the items (letters, documents, books etc) in the filing cabinet.
"Folders" is the filing cabinet.
"Files" are the individual items in the filing cabinet.
A folder normally equates to a directory on a hard disk. So if you have a "C" drive, and create a directory called "Fred" then that can also be known as a folder called "Fred".
A file can be a word document, an MP3 file, a video file, in fact any individual file.
A folder is an A3 size bit or cardboard which when folded holds a number of files, a file is an A4 size bit of paper which contains written text.
On a computer to make things easy to understand in the early days collections of bytes which made up a section of text were named files in relation to their real world equivalent, similarly folders are containers of (computer ) files.
In real terms a folder is simply a special type of file which points the computer to a collection of files assigned by the users.
