A troubled designer with file format problems!

When working in Adobe Photoshop, making up graphics to be used within other DTP applications, I have tried using various file formats, and exporting methods. The work is saved at least at 300dpi, and looks fine on screen, however when I receive the work back from the printers, it is no longer sharp and appears "soft" and blurred. I don't believe is has anything to do the image size or resolution. I think it is the file formats. Anyone know where I am going wrong?
PS: My job depends on YOU!!!! ; )

Which files formats are you using? Tif? Jpeg? EPS?

working in technical publications- you may be better to export in xxx.eps. it seems to cure most of our problems.

Why not contact the printers and ask them which file formats will suite your needs?
