does anyone know of a free internet security package that is both reliable and VERY easy to download and set up that an old biddy like me can understand.

I use a SYGATE personal firewall which is free and fairly straightforward. (just make sure if you make use of an "imported" firewall you switch off windows xps own firewall cos otherwise they interfere)
I use AVG (grisoft) antivirus which is also free and has daily updates.
finally I use Microsoft antispyware which is also free and does daily scans of my HD
