On the google desktop search download thing, there is a scratch pad which is automatically saved.

Download Stickies from here:

You could type your message in Wordpad.(NOT Notepad) .then select the text and then hold down the right button on the selected text and drag it to the desktop. When you release the button you will be given a choice of what to do...select Create scrap here...........that will leave the message on the desktop until you remove or save it.

Obviously you won't want Wordpad in full screen...you need to see the desktop ;-)

In addition to commoner's answer, if you save your message in wordpad (or notepad if your prefer), and copy the document to the Startup folder on your Start Menu it will actually open the wordpad program and display the message when the desktop appears.

3m do free post it notes

These can be set to always be on top of everything - really annoying but does force you to do something about it.

Hi,

Thanks for all your answers, I have downloaded SteveDs Stickies which I learned to do in just a couple of minutes, it is just what I wanted.

As my wife gets up earlier than me in the morning and goes on this computer until she wakes me up with a cup of tea I will be able to tell her what time I want it depending on how late I stay up answering other questions on Answerbank!

I am sure I will use it for other things less important aswell.

Thanks again.
