Corrupt Excel files

I've been racking my brain and come up with nothing. We keep getting corrupt Excel files on our network. The network is built up of 40 users, using cat 5 cabling, over about 50 meters. When the file corrupts it flashes an error about low memory (server is running 1gb RAM and plenty of HD space). When certain users open the files the workload on the server rockets through the roof! Unfortunately this isn't the only office it's happening in.
We've had problems with laptops thinking they're the master browser which has caused problems but that's all sorted now so any ideas anyone?
