microsoft word extension required

when i create a new word document and rename it i have to type the file extension on the end ( .doc ) or it says changing the file extension may make this file unusable.how do i stop this happening as i believe it may be something to do with folder properties.

Go into Control Panel > folder options and click the View tab. Check the box beside 'Hide file extensions for known file types'. This should remove the extensions from your file names and prevent you having to worry about them.

open word ;select tools; options; then click on the save tab in the box that appears....make sure it selected as .....save word files as; word document (* .doc)
