When I search on my iPhone for anything it's doing it three times before it stops searching and provides the results. 

that's safari using google search engine 

just started last night-any ideas what's up?

If you prefer the Google search engine I can only suggest you stop using Safari and use another browser.  

I really don't like Safari

It's worked fine like this for years. I can't understand what has changed.

I now have Google as my go to search engine. It is more useful especially on a phone. You can instantly translate for instance, or ID a plant, or with a photo find the history of a building. So much more.
