I use CCleaner although there is a higher level that you can pay for.

Yes, Ccleaner (free version) will do pretty much everything you want but you do need to set it up and be comfortable with Registry updates/deletes.

I don't thinkthat CCleaner fiddles with the registry unless you ask it to do so. I used to let it tidy my reg and nothing bad ever happened; nowadays I don't bother.

Correct, but you really should keep the registry clean.

Unfortunately Windows updates has a tendency to leave rubbish around.
