Hi all - somehow there are no icons in my COnrol Panel. I can access the programs in control panel, but there are no icon pictures, just the "unrecognised" logo. Any ideas how to restore them? Thanks. PM

You need your CPL files. Your control panel features are linked to CPL files, but in many cases, the icons that they use are also in other CPL files. Make sure you have c:\windows\system32\main.cpl (this CPL file has the icon in it for Administrative Tools (for example)). You could copy the CPL files from another working machine, you could undelete them, you could do a "repair install" (without formatting), or you could manually extract them off of the XP CD (they are compressed and you can use the expand command or get them out of the cabs)).
or you can download newer groovier icons. http://www.wincustomize.com is just one of thousands of websites that offer free icon packages. i have never found a site that offers windows default icons though.
If you're using XP,there should be a "Powertoy" option - Tweak UI- under this there is a repair option which includes Icons.
