Does it boot up in Safe Mode? (In Windows XP, press F8 while the machine is booting up.) If that works, go to Help and Support on the Start menu and click on the Startup/Shutdown troubleshooter. That should help identify and solve the problem. The other thing you might find useful is to do a 'System Restore' from Safe Mode.

Hopefully somebody will be along soon to give advice on what to do if you can't get into safe mode.

I've tried starting it in safe mode but it still does the same unfortunatley.

Does the laptop make any beeping sounds when booting up ?. I know that the number of beeps is the bios telling you of a problem when booting.

Are you sure it switched off originally due to a flat battery as the symptoms suggest a system failure.

By default in System Properties, Windows is set to restart after a system failure. This endless cycle of re-booting will not cease until the original problem is rectified and if you cannot boot from Safe Mode you will need to carry out a repair using the Repair Console from your original Windows istallation disk or failing that, a fresh re-install of the operating system.

Had similar probs with a Dell and had to remove power supply, battery and then hold on switch down for about 20 secs to discharge any residual charge. Also seem to recall Dell telling me to remove memory and removable drives as well but don't recall doing this as laptop rebooted fine when everything was replaced. Doesn't cost anything so maybe worth a try!

thanks everyone for all the suggestions, I'm going to have to attempt a system restore from the o/s disk supplied with the laptop
balance of probabilities is just that there isn't enough power to charge the absolutely flat battery and run the laptop

just plug in the a/c , check the charging light comes on , and leave it overnight before trying to start it
If that was the problem it would boot up with the battery removed which, presumably, it doesn't.
