Google is a search engine.

Google Crome is a browser.

What are you using - windows, mac, tablet - which kind?

Windows..8.1 at the moment
You are probably using the Microsoft Edge browser and have got Google Search set as your home page.
Go to settings at the top of your browser window and click on update.
Or... Windows is an operating system and 8.1 is quite old. Is that what you want to update?
I suspect it's the same laptop running Windows 8.1, if it's the same one from 2021.
Well, we're getting there slowly anyway!

As Tuvok has stated though, Google isn't a browser. It's a search engine, which can be used in any browser. (Confusingly though, Google is also the company that produces the browser called Chrome).

So, before we can tell you how to update your browser, we need to know what it actually is!

Assuming that you're not using one of the lesser-known web browsers, it's likely to be Chrome, Firefox or Edge (or possibly Internet Explorer, as you're using Windows 8.1) that you've got. If you're not sure, look at your taskbar (at the bottom of your screen) to see which icon is showing for it.

The icon for Chrome looks like this

If your browser is Firefox, you'll see this:

If you're using Edge, you'll see the logo on the left here for the old version or the one on the right for the new version:

Once we know which browser you're actually using, we might be able to tell you how to update it. However you need to note that both Edge and Chrome won't update to the very latest version on a Windows 8 machine. (Only Firefox can). So it might not be possible to bring your web browser fully up to date.
Also, worth mentioning that if it is Windows 8.1, support expired on the 10th Jan this year (2023). This means you won't get technical assistance and/or software updates for it any more.
