Unlocking Locked Mobile Phone

Hi. Last year I purchased a Vodafone smart phone from Argos (PAYG) . I didn't use the phone and went to Tesco recently to get a sim only contract but the phone is locked to Vodafone. I've contacted Vodafone who say they can't unlock it and to contact the provider. As it was purchased in Argos has anybody got any idea how I get it unlocked please?
