Right-click an empty area on the desktop and select New>Shortcut.
In the location field, enter SndVol.exe and click Next.
Name the shortcut Volume Mixer.
Right-click the shortcut and select Pin to taskbar.

thanks, but that just put another icon on the taskbar that opens to another slider.
i want the slider visible there on the taskbar - not to have to click an icon to open it.
You can't put the slider on the taskbar, but if you pin the app to the taskbar the slider will stay open and not close when you click elsewhere - that was the closest I could get! :)
